Supreme Court sends a notice to UP Government on 'Aarakshan' ban

The Supreme Court has asked the Uttar Pradesh government to reply to Prakash Jha’s petition seeking a stay on ban of his movie ‘Aarakshan’ by Thursday.

On Tuesday the Supreme Court Panel including Justice Mukundakam Sharma and Justice Anil R. Dave have sent notices to both central and UP government on Jha’s petition.

The hearing for the same will be held on Friday.

Harish Salve, a senior counsel requested a stay on the ban but Chief Justice Sharma said the decision can only be taken after hearing the government’s argument.

A short date was set as Salve insisted that further loss will be incurred as a long weekend is ahead.

The Uttar Pradesh government banned the movie ‘Aarakshan’ as it deals with the sensitive matter of caste based reservation system in India. The government had even canceled all the promotional events of the movie to be held in Lucknow.

Prakash Jha had moved to Supreme Court and filed petition against the ban on his movie on August 12th.

Even the governments of Andhra Pradesh and Punjab had banned the movie but later on reached a comprise with the director regarding few scenes.

The movie stars Amitabh Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone, Prateik Babbar and Manoj Bajpai.
