The legendary music composer Anthony Gonsalves, who is considered one of the best musicians of India, passed way at the Goa Medical College and Hospital on Wednesday. He was 84.
The maestro passed away due to pneumonia. Gonsalves is survived by his wife Melita, son Kiran and daughter Lakshmi. His funeral will take place on Sunday, after his son returns from the US.
The veteran had been confined to wheel chair for the past several months due to pelvic fracture.
He is often said to be one of the unsung heroes of Bollywood music. The legend had trained the likes of RD Burman and Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma. Pyarelal infact went ahead and dedicated his composition ‘My Name is Anthony Gonsalves’ from movie ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’ to Anthony Gonsalves.
He worked with top music composers in 1950’s and 1960’s including movies like ‘Naya Daur’ and ‘Waqt’. He is known as one of the best violinist in India. He was awarded the prestigious Dada Saheb Phalke Award in 2011.
