Filmmaker Prakash Jha recently announced that he has started working on the hugely anticipated sequel to 2010 hit movie ‘Raajneeti’. Ever since then there have been questions raised about the lead cast for the sequel as the original boasted a star cast such as Ajay Devgn, Ranbir Kapoor, Nana Patekar, Katrina Kaif, Arjun Rampal, Manoj Bajpai, Naseeruddin Shah and Sarah Thompason Kane.

The director confessed that it would be challenging to take the story forward but said that Katrina Kaif will have a central role in the sequel.

“It is very challenging to take the 'Raajneeti' story forward. Most of the main characters are dead. Two-thirds of the characters will be completely new. Katrina (Kaif) will have a central role,” said Prakash Jha to PTI.

The casting of Katrina in the original itself had come as a surprise, as many wondered if anglicized Katrina could manage to pull off a character like Indu Pratap and deliver long Hindi dialogues. But the actress surprised many with her performance and also went ahead to win Best Actress Award for the movie.

But the thing that will be missing from the sequel is the much talked about chemistry between Katrina Kaif and Ranbir Kapoor, as the actor will not to be a part of the sequel.

“And though Ranbir's character didn't die at the end of 'Raajneeti', he won't be a part of ‘Raajneeti 2’. Again, I will be doing a spin on the Mahabharat, though this time, it will be completely different,” said the director.

According to the sources it was Ranbir himself who decided to back out of the project as he didn't want to play sidekick to rumored ex-girlfriend Katrina.
