'Barfi' is India's official entry to the Oscars

Even as ‘Barfi’ is still going strong in theaters it has been chosen as India’s official entry to the Oscars February 2013.

‘Barfi’ beat 19 other Indian movies for his honor.

“Barfi is the Indian entry to the Oscars. We selected it to represent the country out of 20 films," said Supran Sen, secretary general of the Film Federation of India.

Directed by Anurag Basu and starring Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Ileana D’Cruz, the movie opened with rave reviews from both critics and audience.

Ranbir Kapoor’s performance as deaf and dumb Murphy and Priyanka Chopra’s performance as an autistic girl has been lauded by critics and audience alike.

Ileana, who made her debut with this movie, too has been appreciated for her performance.

The movie collected Rs 34.6 crore during the opening weekend and went on to garner a total of Rs 58.6 crore over the week.

This is Ranbir Kapoor’s biggest opening yet.

'Barfi' is basically about Murphy’s bitter-sweet relationship with Shruti (Ileana) and Jhilmil (Priyanka) and the chain of events that turns his life upside down.

The movie released on September 14.
