Popular television and film comedian turned director Jaspal Bhatti passed away in the wee hours today when his car rammed into a roadside tree. The car was being driven by comedian’s son Jasraj.
The father son duo along with actress Surilie Gautam, the heroine of his film 'Power Cut', were going from Bhatinda to Jalandar to promote their movie ‘Power Cut’, which is scheduled to release tomorrow, when the accident took place near Shahkot in Nakodar area of the district at 2:30 AM.
They were rushed to a private hospital in Jalandar, where Jaspal was declared dead upon examination. Both Jasraj and Surilie Gautam were injured severely and are in critical condition.
“His body was brought to the hospital after 3 AM and after medical examination he was declared dead," said Dr Harpreet Singh.
Bhatti's son Jasraj and Gautam have been referred to a Ludhiana hospital now.
The 57-year-old actor became popular with his satirical shows like 'Ulta Pulta' and 'Flop Show'. He is also remembered for his role of Jolly Good Singh, a guard, in the movie 'Fanaa'. His first venture as a director was a satire on the Punjab police 'Mahaul Theek Hai' in Punjabi.
He is survived by his wife Savita, a son and a daughter Raabiya.
The cremation is expected to take place later this evening after his body is brought home after completion of various legal formalities, including post-mortem.
