Internationally acclaimed director Shekhar Kapur, who has directed movies like ‘Masoom’, ‘Mr. India’, ‘Bandit Queen’ and critically acclaimed Hollywood movies ‘Elizabeth’, ‘The Four Feathers’ and ‘Elizabeth: The Golden Age’, said that his upcoming movie ‘Paani’ was more than just a film.

“'Paani' is a film, but much more. ’Paani' is a passion, but much more. ‘Paani' is a mission,” tweeted Shekhar Kapur recently.

The movie that kept delaying got a new lease of life when Yash Raj Films decided to produce the ambitious project.

The Oscar nominated director revealed that the movie has been written 15 years ago.

“When first wrote ‘Paani’? 15 years ago. But no one thought it would be such a big issue then,” he wrote on his Twitter page.

“Richard Attenborough said it took him 20 years to get ‘Gandhi’ made. I guess every director has such a passion,” he further tweeted.

The film is set up in a futuristic world where wars have broken out over water. Water is now owned by international corporations who use thirst as a weapon of control. In one such future city, a young love story breaks all the rules and in the ensuing war, water flows back to its people.

The movie is rumored to have a strong Indian and western cast. The male lead will be played by a leading Indian actor while female lead will be played by a well known western actress.

It has been rumored that Shekhar Kapur is very keen on having Hrithik Roshan as the male lead.

The movie, which will go on floors mid-2013, will be shot in India and overseas. It will have music by the Oscar-winning AR Rahman.
