Suraj Pancholi, who was arrested and charged with the abetment of actress Jiah Khan's suicide, has been denied the bail. The aspiring actor will now stay in jail till June 27.
Suraj Pancholi was arrested on June 11 after Jiah Khan’s mother handed the police a six paged letter in which Jiah Khan wrote about her turbulent relationship. The letter was found by the family five days after the actress committed suicide by hanging herself in her home in Mumbai. Though the actress named no one in her letter, the family firmly believes that Jiah Khan was referring to Suraj Pancholi when she wrote "If I stay here, I will crave you and miss you”.
Mr. Pancholi's lawyer has argued that the letter does not name his client and therefore there is no evidence that he abetted the 25-year-old's suicide.
Suraj Pancholi, son of Bollywood actors Aditya Pancholi and Zarina Wahab, dated Jiah Khan for a year.
“There is a suicide note, there is a statement of (Khan's) mother and some circumstantial evidence of triggering," said Additional Police Commissioner Vishwas Nangre-Patil to news agency AFP when justifying the arrest.
A doctor has testified in court that Jiah had been depressed a post-mortem report has revealed that no marks, apart from those on her neck and throat, were found on her body, police said. No traces of alcohol or drugs were found either.
