Few days ago media was buzzing with the reports that Farah Khan had finally found a leading lady for her film ‘Happy New Year’ in Katrina Kaif.

But according to the reports that have emerged today its won’t be Katrina Kaif but Deepika Padukone who will star opposite Shah Rukh Khan in ‘Happy New Year’.

Due to Hrithik Roshan’s brain surgery and delay in the shooting of ‘Bang Bang’ Katrina Kaif’s calendar has suddenly opened up and Farah Khan was keen to grab this opportunity and have Katrina onboard as she needed only 40 days from the actress.

But Katrina Kaif signed two new movies – a movie adaptation of Charles Dickens classic ‘Great Expectations’ by Abhishek Kapoor and Kabir Khan’s new film starring Saif Ali Khan and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala – failed to accommodate ‘Happy New Year’ in her hectic calendar of this year.

“She would have loved to do Farah’s film. Farah initially wanted to sign a completely new girl for ‘Happy New Year’, but when she couldn’t find the right girl to play her leading lady, she zeroed in on Kat. The actress and Farah are very fond of each other ever since they worked together in ‘Tees Maar Khan’. The film’s failure did not affect their mutual fondness. To be in Farah’s next and that too with Shah Rukh with whom Katrina really hit off during ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’, would have been fab. She wanted to do ‘Happy New Year’ but as Kat is committed to finish Vijay Krishna Acharya’s ‘Dhoom 3’ and Siddharth Anand’s ‘Bang Bang’ before working for Kapoor’s and Khan’s films, she could not do it,” said a close friend of the actress to DNA.

Besides, Katrina Kaif would have needed ample amount of time to prepare for the role as the role of a Marathi bar dancer. And the director wanted her heroine to be a fast-talking Marathi girl and also a fabulous dancer.

Along with Shah Rukh Khan the movie also stars Abhishek Bachchan and Boman Irani.
