Bollywood diva Madhuri Dixit is all set to make a comeback on big screen in a never before seen avatar.
The actress, who will be seen in upcoming movie ‘Dedh Ishqiya’, plays a bold character for the first time in her career. Madhuri Dixit said that Indian cinema is now evolving and women are no longer mere eye candies in movies anymore.
“The more depth in the character the more fun you get to perform,” said Madhuri Dixit to IANS when questioned about how comfortable she was with the bold role in ‘Dedh Ishqiya’, which brings her out of her comfort zone.
“I am so thankful that our cinema has come a long way, and I am happy that women are portrayed as characters and not just eye candy in the films. (Women are) very beautifully portrayed on the screen," she said.
“For women, it's a great time to be in the industry. When they narrated the script to me, I was very excited. It's a role that appealed to me,” she added.
In ‘Dedh Ishqiya’ Madhuri Dixit portrays role of Begum Para, a widow looking for a husband and she organizes a poetry competition in her house every year where prospective grooms come and try to woo her.
“Begum Para is a beautiful character written by Abhishek. She is a poetic woman. She is a widow and her late husband's wish was that if she ever marries again, she should marry a poet. So every year she organizes a swayamvar for her. She has been completely unimpressed for two years, but in the third year Babban (Arshad) comes,” said Madhuri Dixit.
Madhuri Dixit, who was last seen in ‘Nach Baliye’ in 2007, said that she wasn’t nervous but it was important for the film to do well.
“I am not nervous, I am very excited about it. The script is very good and I think it's a complete entertainer," said a confident Madhuri.
Everybody wants to see me after a gap. Begum is a strong character. She has many multi-layered kind of a woman. How the film does is very important,” she concluded.
‘Dedh Ishqiya’ is a sequel to 2010 super hit movie ‘Ishqiya’, which starred Vidya Balan, Arshad Warsi and Naseeruddin Shah.
‘Dedh Ishqiya’ is a romantic saga of individuals who are caught amidst love, compassion and deceit. The movie will see Arshad Warsi and Naseeruddin Shah move from Gorakhpur (where ‘Ishqiya’ was set) to Lucknow and meet a highly cultured Muslim family that includes Madhuri Dixit and Huma Qureshi.
