Remembering RD Burman

Today on RD Burman’s 72nd birth anniversary, the Bollywood is paying tribute to the legend.

RD Burman fondly called as Panchamda is known to be one of the best music composers ofIndia. He collaborated with many of the legends in Indian music industry like Lata Mangeshkar, Mhd. Rafi and Kishore Kumar. He worked mostly with Asha Bhosle and this lead to their marriage in 1980.

Remembering him on this particular day many celebrities tweeted their memories with him.

Lata Mangeshkar who worked along side him in memorable songs like ‘Bahon mein chale aao’, ‘Tune o rangeele’ and ‘Tere bina jiya jaye na’ said, “I remember the day when a 13-14 years old boy came to me asking for my autograph, it was R.D. Burman. His father S.D. Burman introduced me to him and said he was learning sarod. This was the first time I met R.D. Burman.

She also added, “Years after that I was approached to record a song for a film 'Chhote Nawab' and I was surprised when I came to know that he (R.D. Burman) was composing the music for the film. When I heard the song I was delighted by his composition. And then we went on to record some amazing songs together. I have sung some wonderful songs with him. He was truly a great musician and he will always be in our hearts”.

Amitabh Bachchan who featured in many movies composed by RD Burman tweeted, “We used to sit together. He was too good. He used to come up with tunes so quickly. With him around we never felt like we were working. It was so much fun. He had this amazing quality of mixing classical, folk and modern music at will. Today his music lives on with and is appreciated even more”.

Dev Anand saab said, “Panchams birth anniversary reminds me of his great work and besides many DMD is very close to my heart and he proved original is inimitable.”

Panchamda started his career in 196i with ‘Chhote Nawab’ and worked for 33 long years. His last movie was ‘1942: Love Story”, which was released after his demise. He is known for his refreshing music that changed the face of Indian music industry. His songs like ‘Piya tu aab toh aaja’, ‘Chura Liya Hai Tumne Jo Dil Ko’ and ‘Dum maaro dum’ are unbeatable even till date.
