After MC Mary Kom won bronze medal in Olympics 2012, filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali announced that he would be producing a biopic on the champion boxer. Ever since then speculations have been rife on who would be essaying the role of Mary Kom in the movie.

Initially it was reported that Sanjay Leela Bhansali and debutant director Omung Kumar, who worked as an art director in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s movies ‘Black’ and ‘Saawariya’, were keen on casting a fresh face for the role.

But according to recent report Sanjay and Omung were contemplating on casting a known face for the coveted role. It’s reported that Priyanka Chopra in the front runner to play Mary Kom in the movie. Sources said that even Katrina Kaif was being considered for the role.

“As far as we know, Priyanka is going through the script right now. But nothing can be finalized until she finishes reading it. It’s a big secret because neither Sanjay nor Omung want to let any information about the film out,” said a source to Hindustan Times.

The source further said that as Priyanka Chopra shares a great rapport with both Sanjay and Omung she might edge out her competitors.

“She was also in talks with Sanjay for Ram Leela (tentative title), and although things didn’t work out for that film, they want to work together soon. If all goes well, Omung’s film might see that happen,” the source said.

But director Omung said that there have been no developments when it comes to casting of the movie.

“Right now, we don’t know anything about the casting. We aren’t sure if it’s going to be an established star or a new face. But whoever is the chosen one will have to go through training to pick up Mary’s style, body language and moves,” Omung said.
